Clans are a large part of a highland
games. They represent hundreds of years of lineages and associations of
Scottish families. The word ‘clan’ comes from s Gaelic term meaning
‘children’. One’s clan was composed of family (nuclear and extended),
all descended from one progenitor. All members of a clan owed allegiance
to the clan chief or patriarch. Each clan has its own tartan, crest and
motto. Today, Scottish clans span the world around, from Europe and the
U.S. to Australia. Preserving history and educating the public are key
objectives for many clans. Throughout the year, clans attend highland
gathering, games and festivals, giving local people a chance to discover
their own genealogy and links to Scottish roots.
